At a cost of several hundred dollars, it made no sense to replace, so I opted to purchase an M1-based Mac mini to act as my anchored office computer. A local shop traced the problem to a failed motherboard. That let me keep Quicken 2007 and Mailsmith running while I sought replacements.īefore I settled on any, my iMac bit the dust in the most expensive way possible. Once I added the SSD and upgraded to Big Sur, I had the performance necessary to run Mojave within a Parallels Desktop virtual machine. A third was the poor performance of the iMac’s Fusion drive, which I eventually fixed with an external SSD (see “ An External SSD Gave My iMac a New Lease on Life,” 9 April 2021). Two of those were Quicken 2007 and Mailsmith, a text-only email program I’ve used for 20 years. I continued to run Mojave on my 2017 27-inch iMac even through the release of macOS 11 Big Sur for a few reasons. Fortunately, Quicken was a step ahead of me-and a step ahead of where I thought it was. Through macOS 10.14 Mojave and the end of 32-bit apps, Quicken 2007 limped along with a surprising series of minor updates that allowed it to continue to function mostly unimpaired.Īnd that’s how I found myself in early 2021 with the digital equivalent of a bulging shoebox of old receipts, unsure of how to move forward in a way that would save me time and frustration. Close wasn’t good enough: if I was going to shift away from a two-decade-old system, I wasn’t willing to give up functionality. None met my requirements, though many came close. I regularly updated that “2015” app version and even bought some upgrades to see if Intuit had added what I needed.Īt various times from 2014 to the present, I also tried Banktivity, Mint, Moneydance, Xero, and others. Intuit’s attempts to reimplement the full capabilities of Quicken 2007 never quite hit the mark see “ Quicken 2015: Close, But Not Yet Acceptable” (2 October 2014). After years of excuses, the company released an entirely new app, Quicken Essentials, that was so stripped down as to be essentially… useless. Intuit never released a true Intel-compatible version of its flagship software but somehow pushed out a hacked-together version that sidestepped the need for Rosetta (see “ Intuit Releases Quicken Mac 2007 OS X Lion Compatible,” 8 March 2012). Separating personal and business transactions by using categories to assign any transaction to any purposeīut Quicken 2007 was already behind the times in 2006! Apple had already begun its transition from PowerPC to Intel chips, and Quicken 2007 had only PowerPC code in it.Highly customizable reporting to extract lists of transactions or summaries of income and expenses corresponding to city, state, and federal tax guidelines.Financial institution transaction syncing and automatic (or at least heavily assisted) reconciliation.Hierarchical categories (like “Business:Hardware:In-state” to mark purchases on which I paid sales tax, or “Income:Consulting:Conferences”).Quicken 2007 included and improved on several bookkeeping needs I had and still have: When Intuit, Quicken’s original owner, released Quicken 2007 for what was then called Mac OS X, it was a major step forward for Mac users in synchronizing online accounts and producing financial reports. This is my journey, and if you’re still on Quicken 2007, it’s one you can take too. I waited so long, however, that I wasn’t forced to give up anything in the process. But after a recent long-delayed update to the current version, Quicken Deluxe, I can now pinpoint the time: mid-1998.Īfter 23 years of using older versions of Quicken, including Quicken 2007 since its paradoxical release in 2006, I’ve finally severed my cord to the past: to PowerPC and Intel processors, to outdated record formats, and to clunky manual entry of transactions. Advertisements Hotville Chicken (Baldwin Hills) How much do I have to pay for how many gigabytes? How redundant is my data stored and is it checked for data integrity? I don’t want to hand over my precious data to some company without strong and secure encryption and by that I mean that nobody but me should ever be able to get my data. Of course, the first question that comes to mind is privacy and security in general. So what are the alternatives? After coming to the conclusion that I actually don’t want a NAS device I thought about online backup services. This is why I think that those NAS solutions are not right for me. One final disadvantage of all those »local« backup solutions is that I have to be home to run my backups but I also want to backup when I’m at work or somewhere entirely different. Besides the costs for the hardware and the time of setting everything up, there are also some costs for power as this machine would have to run 24/7/365. It would still be no real offsite backup, it could still suffer from hardware failure or theft. Modern filesystem with data integrity checks, fileserver and file sharing capabilities and Time Machine compatibility.īut again, with hard drives included it wouldn’t be cheap. It comes with a nice interface and offers everything I would need. I thought about using FreeNAS as I like FreeBSD and it uses the ZFS as filesystem. They usually come with Microsoft Windows Server and require some time investment to get going. These are basically small Atom powered PCs with four HDD slots and no display connector. Then I thought about buying an ✺cer Aspire easyStore H341« or an »HP ProLiant – MicroServer« and building my own custom NAS. To be fair, these stories are one ore two years old. On the other side they are quite expensive, most of them are ugly, they use Filesystems like Ext3/4 or HFS+ and I also heard real horror stories of complete data losses especially with Drobo. On the one side they offer lots of nice features like Time Machine compatibility, web interfaces, fileserver and file sharing features. I really don’t like the consumer plastic boxes like the Drobo, Qnap and Synology products. The other option I considered was buying a NAS. When I buy something like a network attached storage I would also want to use it as a fileserver and other things and Time Capsule just doesn’t offer this kind of flexibility. If thats not correct please leave a comment. As far as I know there are also no checks for data integrity so if some bits flip on the disk you never know. Only one drive also means no data redundancy. You can attach a recovery disk but that just makes it a little better. I don’t like Time Capsule because it is just one drive in a plastic box with no direct access to the hard disk or the files. This would allow me to back up over the air with no wires and drives lying around on my desk. My setup could be vastly improved by using a NAS or Apples Time Capsule. This is still better than no backup but it requires me to connect my drives regularly to my computer. Over the years I’ve collected quite a few drives and with every new drive I get more annoyed by the pile they form on my desk. That is all quite nice but not an optimal solution. With OS X 10.7 (Lion) Time Machine will add local snapshots for the time I’m not connected to my backup drive and it will write those snapshots to the backup drive once I connect it again. Current SetupĬurrently I’m using an USB / SATA adaptor to connect various hard drives without enclosure to my computer to run Time Machine semi automatic backups. Years after several hard drive crashes, after manual backups and semi automatic backups I’m still thinking about the right solution. Experts claim that this poisoning case is one of the worst in the history of Southern Africa. This is because many of these birds quite likely left behind offspring which were relying on their parents to bring food back to the nest. It is important to remember that in addition to these direct deaths, many others were killed indirectly. One example of this occurred in Namibia in July of 2013, when over 500 scavenger birds (including vultures) were poisoned from a single elephant carcass. The poachers do this to kill off the vultures so that they can continue their illegal work undetected. A common practice of many poachers is to poison the carcasses left behind after removing tusks and horns from elephants and rhinos. Poisoning Vulturesīecause vultures attract attention to illegal poaching activities, they have become the number one enemy of poachers. Authorities are able to track recent instances of illegal hunting by following these scavenger birds and taking note of where they are circling. Vultures are attracted to the remains and fly in circles around the ground where it has been left behind. This is particularly true of elephant and rhinoceros poachers, who leave the animals’ bodies after removing their tusks and horns. Vultures and Poachingīecause vultures are attracted to carrion (dead animals), they have played an indirect role in helping authorities identify illegal poaching activity. By ridding the ground of dead animals, vultures prevent diseases from spreading to humans and animals. These scavenged leftovers are often infected with anthrax, botulinum toxins, rabies, and hog cholera that would otherwise kill other scavengers. These birds have an extremely corrosive stomach acid that allows them to consume rotting animal corpses. Because of their role as nature’s garbage disposers, vultures are able to keep the environment clean and free of contagious diseases. However, they are a key component to maintaining healthy ecosystems. Vultures are often overlooked as lowly scavengers. Historical evidence suggests it has been practiced by cultures around the world for over 11,000 years. This practice is not unique to Tibet, however. Many people view this as one final good deed as the deceased is able to offer something to another living creature before going off to rest in the sky. The vultures discover these human bodies, ingesting them and carrying them off into the sky. Monks prepare the bodies of the deceased and set them on platforms to draw the attention of nearby vultures. Instead, the dead are laid to rest in the sky. In this culture, people are not buried after death as a means of controlling preventable infectious diseases. This is true with the inhabitants of the Tibetan plateau, where vultures are part of traditional funerary customs. People of other cultures, however, hold the vulture in high regard. Commonly, people tend to look down on these birds as dirty, ugly, and unhygienic, failing to recognize their importance. In many cultures around the world, particularly in Western societies, vultures are viewed with disdain. Additionally, vultures have a large, hooked beak, which makes tearing and eating flesh easier. Vulture heads are typically bald or covered in much shorter feathers than those found on the body. Despite their differences in origin, most vultures share a similar appearance. New World vultures are native throughout North and South America while Old World vultures can be found in Asia, Europe, and Africa. This bird species is divided into two distinct groups: New World vultures and Old World vultures. Typically, these carcasses are what is left uneaten from other predators. A vulture is a bird of prey that scavenges for its food, meaning that it searches the ground for animal carcasses to eat. Lets users manually select the recording format of the files. We also worked closely with Pastor Brian to ensure he received professional help to eliminate his dependency on this medication, and this was achieved successfully," Hillsong said in a statement.
